The journey of concrete flatwork begins with the preparation. The subgrade, the foundation beneath the concrete, needs to be compacted and leveled to ensure a stable base. Forms, temporary structures made of wood or metal, are then placed to define the shape and size of the concrete pour.
Next comes the concrete mix. The right mix is crucial for the final product’s strength, workability, and finishing characteristics. Factors like water content, aggregate size, and admixtures (additives that enhance specific properties) are all carefully considered. The mixed concrete is then strategically poured into the prepared formwork.
Now we get to show our artistry: finishing. This stage involves a series of techniques to manipulate the fresh concrete and achieve the desired surface characteristics. For exterior applications like sidewalks and driveways, we typically use a broom finish. By dragging a broom across the surface, a slip-resistant, textured finish is achieved. Interior applications we commonly use a troweled finish for a smooth, polished look.
